A gastroenterologist is a specially trained physician who treats diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Following medical school, a gastroenterologist's training includes a three year residency in Internal Medicine, and a gastroenterology fellowship of two years or longer. Gastroenterologists may be board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
